Did you know

  • The pine lily is the only lily native to the Deep South, growing in the wet pine flatwoods and savannas of the Gulf Coast states.
  • Named after Mark Catesby, the English naturalist who produced the first comprehensive natural history of the American colonies between 1729 and 1747.
  • Its flowers face upright — unlike most native American lilies with nodding blooms — and are intensely colored with orange-red petals spotted with purple.
  • It is adapted to fire: the bulbs are buried deep enough to survive regular burns, and fire-cleared ground spurs prolific flowering.
  • Listed as endangered or of special concern in several states due to the near-total loss of its wet pine savanna habitat to development and fire suppression.
