  • Ixora is also called 'flame of the woods' or 'jungle geranium' for its blazing clusters of tiny tubular flowers that cover the shrub almost continuously.
  • It's a sacred flower in Hinduism, used in temple offerings and worship of Lord Shiva, particularly at the Sri Sundareswarar temple in Madurai, India.
  • Ixora has one of the longest blooming seasons of any tropical shrub — it can flower 365 days a year in warm climates.
  • The genus is named after a Hindu deity to whom worshippers traditionally offered the flowers.
