- The firewheel tree's flowers emerge directly from the bark in clusters of 15–20 individual blooms arranged in a perfect spoke-like wheel pattern.
- In its native Queensland rainforest it can reach 100 feet, but in cultivation outside the tropics it grows as a compact ornamental of 20–30 feet.
- The striking flowers are heavily pollinated by lorikeets and honeyeaters, which hover to drink nectar from the wheel-shaped clusters.
- It is slow-growing and may take 7–10 years to first flower, but once established it blooms reliably for decades.
- Specimens planted in temperate climates such as southern California and coastal Mediterranean regions have become celebrated street trees.
