Did you know
- The flower of Bauhinia blakeana appears on the flag and coat of arms of Hong Kong.
- This species is believed to be a natural hybrid and is completely sterile, unable to produce seeds; all trees are propagated by cuttings.
- The bilobed leaves resemble butterfly wings and inspired the genus name honoring the twin botanist brothers Jean and Gaspard Bauhin.
- The original tree was discovered near the ruins of a house on the shore of Tolo Harbour in 1880.
- Because it never sets seed, every Bauhinia blakeana in the world is a clone of that single original tree.
