- Drummond died tragically in Cuba shortly after his Texas expedition, never seeing the fame his phlox achieved in Europe.
- It is the only commonly cultivated annual species in a genus of about 70 mostly perennial species.
- Texas wildflower meadows often blaze with this phlox alongside bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush each spring.
- The word phlox comes from the Greek for 'flame,' referring to the intense colors of the flower clusters.
