Did you know
- Allamanda's brilliant yellow trumpet flowers are some of the largest and showiest in the tropics — up to 12 cm (5 inches) across.
- It's the national flower of the South American nation of Suriname, where it grows wild in the rainforests.
- The genus is named after Frédéric-Louis Allamand, an 18th-century Swiss botanist who studied South American plants.
- Despite the cheerful look, all parts of the plant are highly toxic — the species name 'cathartica' refers to its powerful (and dangerous) laxative properties.
- Allamanda blooms continuously in warm climates and can climb fences, walls, and trellises into a curtain of golden trumpets within a single season.
